About The Contest
INNERSECTION ONLINE SURF VIDEO CONTEST
OFFICIAL 2011 RULES
This is a platform for creating a surf movie. It’s a short film festival for today’s hottest freesurfers to show their latest work. It’s also a competition in which YOU are the judge. The best section will win US$100,000.
For this contest, surfers (working with filmmakers and editors) create their own 2-3 minute surf movie.
Innersection Members (that’s you) rate these sections to determine which ones become part of the next Taylor Steele high-performance surf movie.
The competition runs in four seasonal Rounds (every two months, starting May 1st). Each Round qualifies five new surfers for the final DVD — releasing December 2011. The 2010 DVD is already on sale now. You can download it from our STORE.
Rounds run in three week-long phases:
FIRST: View, rate and comment all uploaded sections. Premium Members create their Top 10 lists (one point per each person on a list), which selects the Top 10 sections.
THEN: ALL Innersection Members rank sections 1 through 10.
FINALLY: We announce the Top Five sections (the fifth qualifier is always a Wild Card, selected by Innersection).
These qualifiers then get back to work improving their section for the final Innersection DVD.
Membership is free. Click below to sign up and start creating your surf movie.
WELCOME TO THE INNER CIRCLE,
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
Surfers/filmers put their sections on the site (week prior to first of the month). Members view, rate and comment on sections (first week of the month) — our most active members will be made Judges and submit their personal Top 10 lists, which narrows the field down to Top 10 finalists. The next week Members rank the Top 10 in order of preference: 1 thru 10 (second week of month). After that, we announce the winners and then do it all over again.
The five winning surf sections will then become part of the Innersection surf movie (top four finishers and one wild card). They will have the additional time to improve their section before it goes on the final DVD.
The final Innersection DVD will include the year’s top 20 sections — five qualifiers from four seasonal Rounds of competition. From these 20, you will decide which section deserves the grand prize of $100,000.
See. Simple.
2011 SCHEDULE
Winter Round begins May 1st.
Spring Round begin June 15st.
Summer Round begins August 1st.
Fall Round begins October 1st.
Innersection DVD releases December 1st, 2011.
*competitor upload window for each round opens one week before start date.
RULES
One surfer per section.
Sections must be between 2 and 4 minutes long. (*Subject to exception and Innersection approval.)
No mechanical assist. (May be asked for proof.)
Entrant is responsible for their own music.
All footage must be exclusive to Innersection submission. Same wave, okay. Same camera, not okay. (Full rights return to filmer following contest period.)
Section must meet approval of Innersection committee (see “Minimum Performance Clause”).
JUDGING
For the first round of judging, Innersection will appoint a panel of Member Judges. The panel is composed of 50-100 of our best users — members who view all the sections, rate fairly and comment frequently.
Ratings, views, comments and expert opinions are all made public and should contribute towards the Member Judges decisions.
All Premium Member Judges chose their Top 10 sections. Each section is awarded 1 point. So, if there were 100 judges, a 100/100 score would be a perfect score.
During the second phase of judging, all member arrange the sections into a ranked order of 1 through 10. A first place position scores 10 points. Second place scores 8 points, Third=6, and so on.
The final four positions are determined by Top 10 ordering of all Innersection members. The fifth pick is an Innersection Wild Card.
MINIMUM PERFORMANCE CLAUSE:
*Innersection reserves the right to refuse any video on any grounds. Ground for dismissal may include (but are not limited to):
-anything pornographic, racist or otherwise offensive
-anything deemed mocking or degrading of the project
-anything deemed low quality production, unworthy of DVD reproduction: ie. shaky filming, lack of focus, distance from subject
FAQ
Q: I signed in but never received a verification email?
A: CHECK YOUR JUNK MAIL. It’s an automated system, so if you typed your email correctly, one got sent (but junk filters often detect automated systems). If you still can’t find it (ugh!), just send us an email at info@innersection.tv ...we’ll sort you out
Q: What happens if I win one of the Event Cycles?
A: For each of the four cycles, five section will qualify for a guaranteed a spot in the next Taylor Steele movie. Winner may (and should) re-edit and re-submit their section after qualifying. But don’t worry: if you qualify, we’ll be in touch.
Q: Do I need a surfer’s permission to upload a video of him?
A: Any surfer may request a section featuring him removed from site at any time.
Q: Do I need a surfer’s permission to upload a video of him?
A: Any surfer may request a section featuring him removed from site at any time.
Q: Can one surfer submit multiple sections?
A: No. One section per surfer. Qualifiers may not re-enter later cycles, but non-qualifiers may.
Q: Do I still own the rights to my footage after I upload to the sight?
A: While your footage is on the Innersection site, your footage is considered property of Innersection Limited. Qualifiers will be paid market value for up to 3-minutes of footage. Non-qualifiers retain all rights to their footage following each round of competition.
Q: If I don’t win, can re-submit the same footage and section in later months?
A: Yes.
Q: What happens if a qualifying section is later disqualified?
A: In this instance, the next highest scoring section will move into the qualifying position. If prize money has already been paid, it must be repaid.
Q: Can I use my own music?
A: Yes. You must have rights to any music used. See the MUSIC page for info clearing your own music tracks and full music related information.
Q: I know a band that would like to make their music available to contestants. How should I let people know? A: Great. See full info on the MUSIC page.
Q: What are the best video specs for uploading to the competition?
A: Most file formats are accepted, but we recommend: Quicktime. H264 codec, to your settings. 756x568. File size will probably be around 250 MB.
Q: What are the best out-put setting for my video for upload?
A: Our site will accept most formats, however, here is what we recommend:
1280x720
H264
800 data rate
multi-pass
de-interlace
*most files will run between 200-400mb.
Q: What’s this about “cover art”?
A: Your cover art is what viewers will click on to view your section. It should be vertical oriented, like a DVD box for your section. 2x3 is a good size ratio, and 200 dpi is plenty. Include your name and an image that promotes your section and stands out.
Q: My section is a little longer/shorter than the 2-4 minute time limit — am i going to be disqualified?
A: The time limit is a loose guideline and we generally won’t DQ anyone for a few seconds over or under. If you have concerns about your length, just contact us and we’ll figure it out. (info@innersection.tv) But we’ll tell you this right now...shorter is usually better.
Q: How is the Wild Card selected?
A: Four sections are picked via the voting. The fifth is a wild card selected by Innersection staff, based on a number of factors; primarily, a surfer who has proven (via both his section here and previous experiences) that he will created a strong section and competitive for the final movie.
Q: If the previous year’s winner (2010 = Matt Meola) gets an automatic spot on the next movie, are they still competing for the Grand Prize?
A: Yes. All sections on the final movie are applicable for the Grand Prize...even the defending champ.
Q: You still haven’t answered my question. Now what?
A: Sorry about that. Shoot us an email in the “Contact” box below and we’ll sort it out.
Innersection’s premium membership club. Don’t worry — regular membership to watch the videos and vote for the final five sections remains exactly as it was: completely free for everyone. Inner Circle members are just committing to help make the movie on a higher level of involvement. On its most basic level, a premium membership is simply a pre-order of the Innersection final movie; a first access download complete with all the bonus features and high-resolution action. This pre-order also comes at a significantly reduced price (and instant access, for those of you in remote areas). However, since you’re committing to watching the movie, we’re going to let you contribute more to making it
*Inner Circle members are all given a personal Top 10 list, awarding one point to each of their favorite 10 sections. This is how the final Top 10 will be determined...by the people committed to the process (rather than little Johnny’s grandma — although we love her, too).
*Inner Circle members all get a vote for the $100,000 winner.
*Inner Circle members have access to view the original Innersection submissions after the round is completed. These are the rough cuts of what you’ll be seeing on the final movie download, and unavailable to everyone else.
*Inner Circle members will also receive special video content from our Qualifier Trips, as well as chances to win prizes and special offers as the event developes throughout the year.
*But wait, there’s more! Sign up now and we’ll throw in a FREE download of Innersection Blue (in case you don’t already have it). Like we said, you’re basically just pre-ordering this year’s movie at a reduced price and then becoming a bigger part of the process of making it. That’s what the Inner Circle is all about.

Entrants will compete for a chance to win great prizes including a Grand Prize of US$100,000, and to have their Section included in the Innersection DVD which will appear in surf shops, direct download and iTunes formats. The Contest will run in four (4) cycles (“Cycle”). Each Cycle is four (4) weeks long, with approximately an additional month break before the next Cycle begins. The Winter Cycle begins on April 1, 2011 at 7:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time and the deadline for submitting a Section for the Winter Cycle is April 7, 2011 at 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time (the “Winter Cycle Submission Deadline”). The Spring Cycle begins on June 1, 2011 at 7:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time and the deadline for submitting a Section for the Spring Cycle is June 7, 2011 at 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time (the “Spring Cycle Submission Deadline”). Registered Members will then have one (1) week from the close of the respective Cycle Submission Deadlines (“Initial Judging Period”) to watch the Sections and rate the Sections on a scale of one (1) to ten (10). During the first week of competition, the Innersection Committee (“Judges”) will judge the eligible Sections received based on the criteria (as defined in the Judging Criteria/Winner Notification Section below). The Judges will determine the top ten (1) Sections (“Top Ten”). The Top Ten will advance into the next week. The next week, Registered Members rank their Top Ten to determine the top five (5) Sections from the Top Ten and rank them from first (1st) to tenth (10th) (“Secondary Judging Period”). The top four ranked sections, and a fifth “wildcard” will compose the top five (5) for the Cycle. The “wildcard” section will be selected by Innersection staff. Thereafter, the top five (5) Sections (“Cycle Winners”) are announced for that Cycle and the Website will be cleared of all of that Cycle’s footage in preparation for the next Cycle. The Cycle Winners selected for each of the four (4) Cycles will be featured in the Innersection DVD and will advance to compete for the grand prize. (Grand Prize”). Each Cycle will generate five (5) Cycle Winners, totaling twenty (20) Sections in the Innersection DVD. All Cycle Winner submissions will be available for evaluation by Registered Members via the DVD only. For at least sixty (60) days from the date the Innersection DVD is released, which is expected to be in December 2011, each Registered Member will have the opportunity to select one (1) Section from the twenty (20) Cycle Winners, using the Sections from the Innersection DVD only, as their vote for the Grand Prize Winner, which will be announced on or before April 1, 2012 (“Final Judging Period”). Each vote will be included with a copy of the Innersection DVD or digital download from Innersection.tv website. The Cycle Winner who has the highest number of votes for his/her Section shall be declared the US$100,000 Grand Prize Winner of the Contest (“Grand Prize Winner”), subject to verification and compliance with these Official Rules. The ten (10) sections with highest point totals will determine the Top Ten (10). The decisions of the Judges are final and cannot be appealed. The Top Ten will then be ranked by Registered Members in the Secondary Judging Period, in their sole discretion. Registered Members will select four (4) Sections out of the Top Ten and rank those four (4) Sections in ranking order from 1-4. A fifth (5th) “WILDCARD” section will be determined by Innersection, to complete the Top Five (5) list. The decisions of the Registered Members are final and cannot be appealed by Entrants. The Five (5) Cycle Winners from each Cycle are then chosen as the Cycle Winners of their respective Cycles. There are four (4) Cycles in the Contest Period, which will total twenty (20) Cycle Winners for the Contest and will be featured in the Innersection DVD. Once the Innersection DVD is released, Registered Members will then get one vote through a vote code that is to be included with each DVD purchase or digital download, at their sole discretion, to decide who will be the Grand Prize Winner. The Cycle Winner with the highest number of votes at the end of the Final Judging Period will be the Grand Prize Winner. Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, contact each Cycle Winner and require any such Cycle Winner to answer additional questions or participate in additional screening procedures; require such Cycle Winner and all individuals appearing in such Cycle Winner’s Entry to sign consent forms and/or releases; and or disqualify any Cycle Winner who is unable or unwilling to do or provide any of the foregoing. When all Cycle Winners have been finally determined, Sponsor will announce the Cycle Winners and the Grand Prize Winner on the Innersection Online Surf Video Contest Website, and may announce the Cycle Winners and Grand Prize Winner on certain Sponsor-affiliated sites or services. Notification of Grand Prize Winner must be kept confidential until the Grand Prize Winner is publicly revealed by the Sponsor. The Sponsor reserves the right to select fewer than twenty (20) Cycle Winners in the event that there is an insufficient number of Sections that are deemed to meet the applicable criteria or if any potential Cycle Winner, in the sole opinion of the Sponsor, does not comply with the Sponsor’s eligibility and verification requirements.
